The Minnesota Discovery Center is home to the entire collection of Rosalee Goddard Vogel’s artwork. Born in 1918 in Virginia, MN, Vogel led a life dedicated to a wide array of art, including photography, painting, drawing, collage, and sculpture, until she ended her life in 1987. Her work has hung in museums like the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, as well as other small galleries. MDC is excited to present this temporary exhibit to showcase a portion of Vogel's collection.

Out of the Shadows has both a literal and figurative meaning. This collection is literally coming out of storage to be on display for the first time, but it also represents Vogel’s life experiences. Burdened with anxiety that was accompanied by a nervous breakdown in 1954, Vogel used art as a way to cope with life’s problems, which can easily be seen throughout her work. This exhibit will take you on a journey of her life through her artwork and how an Iron Range born artist became well known in New York City for her photographs and paintings.
