The Minnesota Discovery Center's North by North Film School, in partnership with the Zeitgeist Film, is an affordable option for the Northland’s diverse creative community ranging from filmmakers, graphic designers, multimedia artists, and theatrical artists to learn, work, create, and connect. With teaching hubs in Chisholm and Duluth, we will add important contributions to the regional film ecosystem. 

Our goal is to empower, support, and educate Northland community members ages 16+ as active participants in shaping our culture, and engage diverse communities to rethink the way we view film, art, and local storytelling. We provide access and a platform to work, learn, create, and experience filmmaking and media production in our community. 

Benefits include access to iMac computers loaded with creative design and editing software, meeting rooms, multi-media studios, film/video equipment for on-site photo/video shoots & projects, digital tools, and more.

Introduction to Video Production – Chisholm, MN - SIGN UP

Wednesdays (4 weeks in person) – 3/23/22, 3/30/22, 4/6/22, 4/13/22

Times: 6:30pm-9:00pm

Capacity: 12 Students 

This intro course will provide education of basic video/film/audio production. The goal of the course is for students to develop the ability to capture great video images and audio, and to be able to edit those two elements together to tell a story.

During the course you will learn:

• The basics of operating a video camera

• The basic principles of how to capture great video and audio

• How to edit video and audio

• How to tell a story by combining video and audio

Instructor Jacob White: Jacob White is a video producer and wilderness guide based in Ely, MN. He has been editing and making media for 15 years. He honed his craft at NYU Film School in New York City during the early 2010's and has since worked as a freelancer and started his own company, White Pine Productions, where he partners with small businesses, organizations, artists and individuals to help them craft their communications. Jacob believes that the stories we tell help shape and create the world around us, and he is excited to share his skills and knowledge as a video editor to support the growth of other filmmakers, artists, and creatives in Northern Minnesota.

 


 

Editing Workshop – Chisholm, MN - SIGN UP

Thursdays (8 weeks in person) 3/24/22, 3/31/22, 4/7/22, 3/14/22, 4/21/22, 4/28/22, 5/5/22, 5/12/22

Capacity: 8 Students

Our editing workshop is designed for students who are interested in motion picture, television, and new media post-production. Students learn theory in motion picture, television and media production and editing. They apply that knowledge by producing a variety of projects using Adobe Premiere.

Introduction to Screenwriting Workshop - SIGN UP

Do you have a great idea for a feature film? Many have great ideas; only few craft them into screenplays. In this workshop, learn screenwriting fundamentals as you develop your idea from pitch to outline to screenplay. While no previous screenwriting experience is required, you should come to the workshop with ideas for short films.

Intructor Graham Holford:

Graham Holford is a filmmaker and screenwriter from the United Kingdom. After graduating from the University of Greenwich with a BA in Film Studies he moved to South Korea, where he became part of a filmmaking community. He worked on different features and short films throughout his 8 years in South Korea. He moved to the USA to get an MFA in filmmaking from Ohio University. He has been teaching screenwriting for the past 3 years at Ohio University and has been a programmer at Athens International Film and Video Festival for the past two years. He has been writing and directing films that have been screened at festivals in Asia, Europe, and North America.
