We're planning a new children's space in our museum and we need input AND SUPPORT. Share your thoughts with our museum director, Dr. Melissa Stewart, Thursday, November 12 from 6:30-7:30. Iron Dogs: Snowmobiling in Minnesota

The Museum staff of Minnesota Discovery Center are working with area snowmobile clubs, the Department of Natural Resources, the Vintage Snowmobile Club of America, the Antique Snowmobile Club of America, the Antique and Classic Snowmobile Club of Canada, the International Snowmobile Halls of Fame in Eagle River and St. Germaine, WI, The Eliason family, area dealers and manufacturers to mount an exhibition highlighting the history of the snow machine in Minnesota.
Meet Kathryn Nordstrom
Saturday, November 14
Kathryn Nordstrom discusses her book The Fish House Book: Life on Ice in the Northland, a work replete with images of structures appearing on lakes across the region, as well as commentary. Visit with Nordstrom Saturday, November 14, at 2 p.m. in the MDC theater.

Festival of Lights
December 5-6
Festival of Lights is a family-themed weekend with decorated trees, children's activities and special foods for everyone. Check back often for more details. If you'd like to participate by sharing your ornament collection, contact Deb Rowbottom at 218-254-1223. Decorate a tree you provide, or decorate one of ours to show off your holiday spirit!

Thoreau's Walden: A Journey in Photographs by Scot Miller January 16-May 2, 2010

This traveling exhibit is presented by the Harvard Museum of Natural History and documents photograhper Scot Miller's 1999 journey to retrace Henry David Thoreau's steps during the time he spent at Walden in the 1840s. Minnesota Discovery Center will offer the following events and workshops during the exhibit:
January 21: Duluth News Tribune columnist and outdoor enthusiast Sam Cook will discuss writing about the outdoors at 6 p.m.
January 30: Hibbing Community College professor and historian Steve Potts talks about Thoreau and Walden at 2 p.m.
February 6: Artisan Kathy Culbert teaches how to make a 3-D star ornament of birch bark, beginning at 10 a.m.
Februay 20: Artisan Kathy Culbert teaches how to make a birch bark woven soap dish, beginning at 10 a.m.
February 20: Speaker Phil Fitzpatrick discusses modern-day Thoreaus at 2 p.m.
March 6: A photography class will be held, led by Talicia Lerfald
March 27: Artisan Kathy Culbert teaches birch bark wish bead necklaces, beginning at 2 p.m.
April 17: Spin-In Day for crafters with spinning wheels, beginning at 10 a.m.
April 24: Hibbing Community College professor and historian Steve Potts discusses Henry David Thoreau's visit to Minnesota at 2 p.m.
April 30: Arbor Day program
